How to Choose the Perfect Wardrobe for Your Bedroom in Uganda

A wardrobe is one of the biggest purchases for a bedroom. This guide helps you choose the right size, style and type of wardrobe for a Ugandan home.

Sliding Doors vs Hinged Doors: Which is Better for Your Room?

This is the first decision most people face when buying a wardrobe in Uganda.

Sliding Door Wardrobes

Sliding doors do not swing outward — they slide along a track. This makes them ideal for bedrooms where the bed is close to the wardrobe, or where the room is small and you cannot afford the extra space a swinging door needs.

The drawback: you can only access one side of the wardrobe at a time. If you want to see everything inside, you have to slide back and forth.

Hinged Door Wardrobes

Traditional swing-open doors give you full access to the entire wardrobe at once. This makes organising, packing and finding clothes easier. They require about 50-60cm of clear space in front of the wardrobe for the doors to open fully.

For most bedrooms in Kampala that are 12 feet wide or more, hinged doors work perfectly well and cost less than sliding door mechanisms.

How Many Compartments Do You Need?

This depends entirely on how many people are using the wardrobe and how much clothing, shoes and bedding you need to store.

A standard wardrobe layout includes:

  • A hanging rail for shirts, dresses and suits
  • Shelves for folded clothes, shoes and bags
  • A top shelf for suitcases, boxes and items used rarely
  • Optional drawers for undergarments and small items

At Lucky JB Furniture, we build wardrobes to your specifications. Tell us how many suits you own, how many dresses, how many shoes — and we design the interior accordingly.

What Size Wardrobe Do You Need?

For a single person: a 150cm wide wardrobe is usually sufficient.

For a couple: 200cm to 240cm wide — or two separate wardrobes side by side.

For a family bedroom where children's clothes are also stored: consider a 270cm or wider fitted wardrobe that runs the full length of one wall.

Built-In vs Freestanding

Freestanding wardrobes can be moved when you relocate. This is important for people renting homes in Kampala — you do not want to leave your wardrobe behind.

Built-in wardrobes are fitted to the walls and ceiling of the room. They make the best use of every centimetre of space, including awkward alcoves and sloped ceilings. But they stay with the house when you move.
