The Challenge: Uganda's Climate and Your Furniture
Uganda sits near the equator. That means high temperatures, significant humidity (especially during the rainy seasons in April and November), and lots of dust on dry days. All three of these things affect wooden furniture in different ways.
Heat causes wood to expand. Humidity causes it to swell and warp. Dust builds up in joints and scratches surfaces when wiped incorrectly. Knowing this helps you protect your furniture properly.
1. Keep Furniture Away from Direct Sunlight
Direct sunlight bleaches and dries out wood, causing it to crack over time. Position beds, sofas and TV units away from windows that get strong afternoon sun. If your room layout does not allow this, use curtains or blinds during the hottest part of the day (12pm to 4pm).
2. Dust with a Soft, Dry Cloth — Not a Wet One
Many people wipe furniture with a wet cloth or wet mop. This pushes moisture into the grain of the wood and causes swelling and dark stains over time. Always dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Wipe along the grain, not across it.
3. Polish Every 3 Months
A good furniture polish (wax or oil-based) creates a protective layer on the surface that repels moisture and minor scratches. Apply a small amount to a dry cloth, rub in circular motions, then buff off with a clean cloth. Do this every three months — more often in very dusty areas like Kalerwe or near construction sites.
4. Use Coasters and Placemats
Hot cups of tea, cold soda bottles and plates leave rings and heat marks on bare wood. These are almost impossible to remove once they are set. Use coasters on coffee tables and TV units at all times.
5. Control Humidity in the Room
During the rainy season, humidity in Kampala can reach over 80%. This causes wooden joints to swell and drawers to stick. If possible, keep rooms ventilated — open windows for fresh air flow. Do not place wooden furniture directly against walls where moisture from the wall can transfer into the wood.
6. Deal with Scratches Quickly
Small scratches can be hidden using a matching wood touch-up marker or a little shoe polish in a similar colour. For deeper scratches, mix equal parts olive oil and white vinegar, apply with a cloth, and leave for an hour before wiping off. This will not fix the scratch completely but will reduce how visible it is.
Quality Wood, Longer Life
The best protection for furniture starts at the point of manufacture. At Lucky JB Furniture, we use properly dried, quality timber at our Kigo workshop — wood that has been prepared for Uganda's climate. Poorly dried wood warps and cracks within months. Our furniture is built to last years with basic care.
