Kitchen Cabinet Designs That Work for Ugandan Homes

The right kitchen cabinets transform a Kampala kitchen. Here are the most popular designs we build — and how to choose one that fits your space and cooking style.

Why Kitchen Cabinets Matter

The kitchen is the most-used room in most Ugandan homes. It is where breakfast is made before school runs, where the maid works during the day, and where the family gathers on weekends. Good kitchen cabinets make this space organised, hygienic and pleasant to work in. Bad ones make cooking frustrating and create hiding places for cockroaches and moisture.

The Most Popular Kitchen Cabinet Layouts in Kampala

The L-Shape Kitchen

The most common layout in Kampala apartments. Cabinets run along two walls that meet at a corner. This creates an efficient work triangle between the sink, the cooker and the refrigerator. Works well in kitchens that are 8 feet by 10 feet or larger.

The Single-Wall (Galley) Kitchen

All cabinets and appliances along one wall. Ideal for very small kitchens, studio apartments, and bedsitters. Simple, affordable, and surprisingly efficient when well-organised.

The U-Shape Kitchen

Cabinets along three walls. Maximum storage and work surface. Best for larger homes — standalone houses rather than apartments. The U-shape works well when you have a household that cooks large meals regularly, for example for a family of six or more.

The Kitchen Island

A standalone cabinet block in the centre of the kitchen, separate from the wall units. Popular in open-plan homes and among customers who entertain frequently. The island adds extra work surface and can include a sink, a gas burner, or just storage underneath.

Upper Cabinets vs Lower Cabinets

A complete kitchen has both. Upper cabinets (wall-mounted, above the counter) store plates, cups, spices and dry food. Lower cabinets (floor-standing, below the counter) store pots, pans, cleaning supplies and heavier items.

Many people in Uganda skip upper cabinets to save money — and then regret it within six months when counter space becomes chaotic. We recommend budgeting for both from the start.

Material: What We Use at Lucky JB Furniture

We build kitchen cabinets using moisture-resistant MDF and plywood with melamine or lacquer finishes. This handles Uganda's humidity far better than plain chipboard, which swells and crumbles when it gets wet — which it always does in a kitchen.

Hardware matters too. We use quality hinges and drawer runners that open and close smoothly for years, not ones that start squeaking after three months.
